Scaffolding News Roundup: Budget 2026, a Wiltshire Landmark and Hot Works Safety
Budget 2026, a Lansdowne Monument scaffold and an HSE hot works fine: what this week's news means for customers in Wiltshire, Hampshire and Dorset.

Welcome back to our weekly look at what's happening in scaffolding and construction, and what it means if you're planning work on your home or business. This week brought the Budget, an impressive scaffold on one of Wiltshire's best-known landmarks, and a timely fire safety reminder.
Budget 2026: fuel duty, wages and apprentices
The Budget on 28 October extended the 5p fuel duty cut until the end of June 2027 and confirmed that the National Living Wage will rise by 3.9% to £13.21 an hour from 1 April 2027 (Scaffmag). NASC, the scaffolding trade body, said the measures offered "limited short-term relief alongside potential longer-term opportunities". The Government also plans a target of at least 3% apprentices on large government construction and infrastructure projects (Construction Enquirer).
Our take: For homeowners and businesses, nothing changes overnight. If you're planning work for spring 2027, it's worth getting a quote early so you know where you stand. We're always happy to talk your plans through, and our CISRS-trained scaffolders will get the job done safely.
Scaffolding a Wiltshire landmark: the Lansdowne Monument
Closer to home, Shield Scaffolding Services has erected access around the 38-metre Lansdowne Monument on Cherhill Down in 19 days, for conservation specialists Cliveden Conservation (Scaffmag). The Grade II* listed obelisk dates from 1845, and the steep, rutted track meant vans and lorries couldn't reach the hilltop, so the team worked with a local farmer to get materials up to the site.
Our take: It's a great example of why planning matters as much as the build itself. Tricky access, listed buildings and exposed sites are common across Wiltshire, Hampshire and Dorset. If your property has awkward access or heritage features, tell us early and we'll plan a scaffold design that suits the building and the site.

HSE fines contractor after roof fire
The HSE has reported that a contractor was fined £20,000, plus £8,270 costs, after a fire on the roof of a 14-storey building under construction in Staines-upon-Thames. Welding sparks ignited uncovered foam insulation, and four workers escaped down a single ladder. There was no risk assessment, no permit to work, no fire extinguishers and no way of raising the alarm (HSE).
Our take: Fire safety and safe ways off a roof go hand in hand. If roofers or other trades will be doing hot works from your scaffold, let us know at the quote stage. We'll make sure the access, ladders and edge protection suit the job. As a CHAS-accredited firm, we take planning and safety seriously on every site, big or small.
